Effortlessly melodic with a simple but great hook.

“Yellow and Grey” recalls my recent train journey to Port Sunlight (the historic workers’ village in Wirral, UK), on the ageing yellow and grey trains that pass through the village. These trains are being replaced by shiny new modern trains which are also yellow and grey, hence the line “Yellow and Grey is here to stay!” The song’s overall themes are nostalgia and new beginnings!

“Yellow and Grey” includes a line from the poem “From a Railway Carriage” by Robert Louis Stevenson (can you spot it?), and there’s also a nod to the classic Kraftwerk song “Trans Europe Express” with Mistrust recording a German language version of “Yellow and Grey” (“gelb und grau”) which is released alongside the original song.

The trains featured in video and song are the new Merseyrail Class 777 Electric Trains which run between Liverpool Central and Kirkby, along with the Class 507 and 508 trains which run between Liverpool Lime Street and Chester.

Yellow and Grey comes with a bonus track, “Here to Stay”!

Gelb and Grau (The German Version of Yellow and Grey) will be out soon! Subscribe and follow this blog so you hear the announcement first!

Review of Yellow and Grey by Neil March aka Trust the Doc

The unmistakable low register, slightly conversational tones of Manchester’s Tim Blackburn aka Mistrust can be heard on Yellow and Grey. It’s a tune that is unashamedly basking in the memories of early 80s Synth and Electro Pop of a kind once pioneered by the early versions of OMD and Human League. The synths are warm, buzzy and irresistibly tuneful, playing off against Tim’s deadpan but oddly happy sounding vocals. Effortlessly melodic with a simple but great hook. Synth Pop that will put a smile in your heart.
