David Cameron likes George Orwell

It’s official! I’m sure David Cameron (allegedly) likes George Orwell. Well, surely he must. 1984: surely an inspiration – a template for us all. Why else would he allow this country (England) to descend into some Orwellian shadow-world, a dictatorship masquerading as a democracy. A place where the super-rich tell the masses that the poor and vulnerable are to blame for the country’s economic woes; where the same poor and those unable to beat the never ending trap of poverty will become cashless – forced to buy food from “official” government outlets. “UK Food  – Sponsored by ASDA”.

The poor and vulnerable: add to that the long-term sick and those with mental health problems, those who want to work but can’t get beyond the application forms. We’re told that they’re to blame – they’re the ones who are bringing the country down; destroying opportunities for the rest; stifling economic and educational growth. Spending our money on Sky TV, fags, booze, and putting their own kids into poverty. Gradually removing our children’s future. It’s reinforced in the endless diatribe of the “free press” – the  frenzy of someone to blame. It’s easy to blame to vulnerable. Try playing “Spot the Satellite Dish on the Council Estate”.

Well, no more. The poor and vulnerable will no longer be able to spend our money on the things they want. It’s food or nothing. No choice. The poor and vulnerable will become “The Cashless Society” – Sponsored by Visa/Master/Amex” or whoever wins the contract to provided all state benefits in the form of a top-up credit card. A card that will come with a 20% admin fee. A fee paid for by….? Spend the money on what we tell you to and where we tell you to spend it, or else. ASDA/TESCO etc.,  will become the shop of necessity rather than choice. Those who have a job or a privilege will have cash. Those who don’t will not.

Orwell described a world where whatever the ruling classes told the masses was the truth. They believed it. No matter how harsh or wrong, no matter if there was a contradiction from one day to the next. Dissenters were removed, punished, told to retract their “lies”. However, it’s not 1984. Newspeak is alive. The poor are to blame for all our woes and the past of the Banking Crisis, poor political decisions and economic crises are written out of history. If you were given a roof over your head when you were homeless, when the politicians said you needed a home with enough rooms to house the sick, mentally ill, vulnerable, and they’ve died, grown up, got better, you’re no longer allowed to stay there. Either that or stay and we’ll penalise you financially. It’s as though those previous decisions and policies never existed. Written from history.

My interest in all of this?

I’ve got a job. My wife is carer to her 21 year old son who has autism. He can’t go to work. He can’t cope with people, with life outside our family. He’s on DLA, soon to become PIP. He spends his money on food, heating, electricity, and other essentials, and a few things to keep him sane – to take his mind off all of his phobias and anxieties and depression. Things to stop him from spiralling into an early grave. He’ll probably never ever get a job, so it’s going to be a life on benefits for him. Which means some administrator somewhere telling him to spend his money on food and the rest going straight to the utilities companies. His sister has problems too. She’s just been diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum too. She needs things to keep her sane and to give her some focus in life.  Whether she is lucky enough to get a job, I don’t know.

Until then, it’ll be food or nothing for her. Their future is bleak. They’ve already had a bad start in life. No qualifications because of their disabilities. Disadvantaged and competing against the best. I worry about them and their future. Do the Super Rich, the Media Owners and commentators, the politicians and the people who will not question what they’re being told, the people who say they want to help the needy, truly understand the plight of millions of people who are vulnerable and may join the cashless society, really care, really understand what sort of society they’re creating. IngSoc comes alive. Third Class aisles in Tesco replacing the Bread and Cakes. Disinfectant sprays replacing security scanners.

Finally, do those companies know what they’re doing? From morning till night, droves of unemployed, unwashed, benefit scroungers shopping for Smart Price food. How many of their more wealthier patrons will continue to shop there when they’re having to associate with the great cashless brigade?
gullible fools programmed by worthless hacks in the pay of the super rich join in the demonisation of the most vulnerable

Disclaimer

I don’t proclaim that David Cameron likes George Orwell or is inspired by him. In fact, I’m rather reluctant to criticise him, as he’s having a bit of a hard time from the rest of the Conservative Party. Maybe I should have go about Michael Gove instead.

Catching up

First, a few changes/updates I’ve made to this blog:

- I’ve reverted to the “everything’s gone green” theme from last year (see why below).
- Most of my old songs and tunes are now available as free direct downloads in my Music page.
- I’ve reorganised my links on the blogroll-type list, and included some new friends.

Still more changes to be made though…

Too much time on Twitter recently has left me little time for my proper blog here on WordPress, and even less time for changing the homepage at mistrustmusic.co.uk. I realised the other week that the link on the homepage still pointed to my blog entry about my Rude Mechanicals remix being released last October. I guess it was still relevant at the moment, but now it’s coming out on the Pitch Black remix CD at the end of April, I need to update it. Cue redesign in Dreamweaver! I’m trying to tie in the design of the homepage to my photo of Talacre Beach that people have commented on, along with this wordpress blog. Vincesapplemac (Vince Elgey), one of my twitter friends, keeps telling me to go the self-hosting route and install a wordpress.org blog so I can change the theme to something more individual than the wordpress.com themes.  Maybe he’s right, but I need to get organised first! In the meantime, I’ll probably add a couple of pages to mistrustmusic, including links to all my music.

Other recent news/updates

Henry in New Zealand, who is definitely my number one fan, is still plugging my Rude Mechanicals remix! Can’t thank him enough.

I’ve made quite a few new friends on Twitter – as I mentioned earlier, so hello to everyone on there. I’ve also invented  a couple of new categories  on there: #fickletwittering and #unfollowed. If you’re a twitterer, have a look for them to discover what they mean! If not, all will be explained in my next post on here.

I’m going to see Ultravox in concert next week, and getting very excited about it! For those who don’t know them, they were big in the 1980s, and have just reformed for a one-off tour. I’ll hopefully be twittering from there and post some photos up in twitpic. The last time I saw Ultravox (in 1984), they were using a lot of pre-MIDI equipment, things like the ARP Odyssey and Yamaha CS80, so it will be interesting to see  how they recreate the songs using things like the MacBook Pro… (Follow them on Twitter!)

I’ve sent Animat some video clips I took of them performing the live score of Tuvalu in Leeds a few weeks ago. Some of the clips are very dark, but they may put some on Youtube

My songs on MusicFreedom have disappeared, in fact MusicFreedom.com has disappeared!

Paul, my 16 y.o. stepson with Autism, is still out of school, however he’s visiting a special school for an hour or two twice a week, which is progress…

Really need to publish more updates on here!

By the way – the photo of the tree is one I took on my new Sony Ericsson phone.

Youtube and other video sites driving web traffic

I’d guess that a lot of people have a video or two on Youtube, Google Video, and some of the many other video hosting sites. Out of those people, how many of them use the videos to drive web traffic to their own, or someone else’s website?

I’ve got a couple of the O’Neill surfing clips on Youtube. These are two of the sections that are used in the “Deep Blue Open 2005″ promo film, featuring three of my tracks.  Since I uploaded them, I’ve have quite a lot of hits, but it doesn’t seem to be driving a lot of traffic to my this blog or the mistrust music website. The videos are amongst quite a lot of other surfing videos so you’d think that people who watch those would follow the links to my music. Maybe not. There doesn’t seem to be a lot written on the web about how to improve your traffic using Youtube etc. Maybe someone could suggest something.

Following on from the last post – “The Colour Purple” – I can now report that I was featured artist of the week on a show on Purple Radio, which is the official radio station of the Big Chill organistion. The DJ, Ketsbaia, played three tracks, “Dubcrazy”, “Painless Light” and “Distant Shores”. I got a few nice comments from the DJ, and some support on the Big Chill Forum. My tracks were played alongside a lot of “A-list” bands, and seemed to hold up ok. He ran out of time to play a fourth track “Never Alone”, but said that he liked it that much that he’d play it in a couple of weeks.

As for other things…

The “mistrust clan” went to Borth near Aberystwyth for a week in a caravan at the end of July. It’s an old fishing village, which is very quiet and suited Paul (my stepson, who has PDD-NOS, and a massive social phobia, amongst other things). It started off as a complete disaster – pouring rain, burst car tyre, everyone worn out – but in the end we didn’t want to come home. Lots of nice scenery and fresh air to inspire me to write some new tunes. I’ll put some of the photos on Flickr soon.

I’m in the middle of applying for a new job, and contemplating a move from the Manchester area to Yorkshire. Things are happening at work which mean I could be out of a job or at least being downgraded in the next two years, so the time is write to put my skills to better use. Besides that, the holiday proved how much Paul, and the other children, need to be nearer the countryside and aware from where we’re currently living. If anyone reading this lives in the more scenic areas of West Yorkshire, please can you leave a comment saying if it’s a nice place to live?

Autism and music

As you’ll probably have read on Paul’s blog, he’s still not back in school. This is having a massive knock-on effect on the rest of family and my in-laws, and is generally causing chaos at Mistrust Towers. Anything from a decent night’s sleep to watching tv is being affected as Paul’s life is almost completely unstructured and he’s having to find things to do all the time, something he finds quite difficult at the best of times. He’s getting tired at all the wrong times, just because he’s getting really anxious in the mornings from not knowing who may call round to see him (school inclusion people, mainly). If you haven’t been here before, he’s got Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not otherwise specified, which means Autism/Asperger’s type personality and behaviour, hence all the anxieties.

What’s this got to do with “mistrust music”? Well, for some reason, Paul has decided that he wants to learn to play the drums. That means he wants a drum kit. Not just a basic, cheap kit. A proper one, with all accessories included. Bear in mind that he has a very small bedroom and there’s nowhere else in the house that it could go. So that’s a non-starter. I’ve told him we’ll get a basic drum pad-type thing – one of those plastic things without about 4 pads on it, with a set of plastic sticks – so he can see how it goes. Judging by his recent attempt to learn to play the guitar, he’ll give up if he can’t work out how to play a particularly beat. With Paul, it will be as follows: Learn the bass drum, then the snare, etc. Then learn a rock beat, then a waltz, etc, and if he gets stuck on one, he’ll pack it in.

He also wants to learn keyboards….. He’s been fiddling with my old Casio MT31 (which still works after nearly 30 years!) but it’s got small keys and he’s having problems playing the notes. He’s gone onto “Learn to Play.com” or something which has basic riffs to play, and has been practicising the same thing over and over till he gets it completely right. The problem is that there’s no audio on the site, so he relies on me to say if it’s right. Once again, if he can’t play one of the tunes, he’ll pack it all in.

It’s good that he’s interested in making music the “traditional” way, instead of using loads of samples in Acid Pro, and he’s actually got potential in the technique side of things. He now wants to use my Evolution Midi keyboard, plugged into the computer, and use a keyboard training program.

All this means I’m getting less and less time to come up with some new tunes. I’ve got the playing bug again and I want to do some live work, but there’s very little time to do much at the moment because of all this domesticity. The tunes that went to Candycover music library should be live soon, and that could open up some new opportunities, and I’d like to be prepared for anything that comes along. Howeve, anything that will keep him focussed, occupied, and will develop his skills, is something we’ve got to keep up with.

You’ll probably have noticed the image at the top of this post. It’s a photo by Headancer, one of the Big Chill Forum folk. I asked on there last week if I could use some of the things that have been occasionally posted on the forum, or if anyone could point me to some others I could use to brighten up my blog. So, thanks to Simon Green (Headancer) for use of the image. If you want to see more of his photography, please go to Headancer on Mac.com and tell him I sent you. Please note: All the images used on this site are copyright and should not be used without the owners’ permission. The pic I’ve used is from eventful.org.uk. It reminds me of the fact that I’m off on holiday in about 5 weeks……
